CMS Releases Long-Awaited Standardized Data Formats for Hospital Price Transparency Files

Including a standardized JSON schema for the machine-readable file.

On November 14, 2022, CMS announced the availability of standardized sample data formats that hospitals may use to make public their standard charges to comply with the price transparency law.  These formats are provided in conjunction with accompanying data dictionaries and are the result of input received from the public through rulemaking and industry experts from hospitals, technology, and academia.

The sample set includes a JSON data schema that follows similar standards that CMS has developed for the Transparency in Coverage rule applicable to insurance companies.

The sample formats and corresponding data dictionaries can be viewed and downloaded here: https://www.cms.gov/hospital-price-transparency/resources.
